Resources for Health Connectors
Welcome!
This page will contain links to material not available on the HCM website or open sections of this website. It was updated in Sept 2023 to account for the cessation of the original video hosting.
Material from
August 2020 Health Connector Discussion Day
A day with Jenny, Francis, Fen, Jo, Julie, and Claire. We had some technical problems so the material hasn’t been as easy to turn into nice little films as we’d hoped, however there is lots of food for thought here!
If in doubt about any of this material - USE THE RESOURCES on the HCM Website for YOURSELF. Working through these ideas and working with the practical elements will really help you understand when and how to bring these to your clients attention!
The same resources are avaialble directly through the Resources page of this website too.
Innate Needs and Resources
- the ‘Human Givens’ Approach
These first three films are all from the presentation at the start of the day, and the films just show the slides, and you can hear us all speaking. Please note the microphone was closest to Andrew and so the comments other people are making sound quieter by comparison.
The first film sets the scene and we discuss the innate emotional needs
The second film runs through our innate emotional and psychological resources, including a discussion of how the emotional guidance system and the imagination can work together to create the core disturbances in stress and mental illness.
Lastly a chat about our Physical Needs, and Activity (alias ‘exercise’) mainly, though we do go onto some wider topics, mention sleep etc.
Diet and Health
The first film lasts an hour on diet and health.
This took the form of Q&A’s - though some of the answers were quite long!
At the start I mention this article on our difficulties being rational about food.
We did a mock-up consultation at the end, and this appears at the end of the second Language Skills film. (Minding our Language 2)
The second film in this section is basically a 7 minute audio recording of some follow-on conversation about this topic, with pictures!
Sleep
a session covering sleep - what it does and how we can ensure a better night’s sleep.
Minding our Language
These two films cover many of the key language skills that help us to integrate the ideas covered in the preceeding sections.
They originated as a standalone language skills meeting for the clinicians at FMP and also are covered in The Lost Update course, and so many of the examples are quite GP-oriented. However, as the principles are universal it seemed silly to re-record these again!
Episode 1 (42 minutes total) Covers:
Basic concepts, Relevant Needs and Resources, Yes-sets, Summarising, Reframing, Yes-anding, some other tricks
the last 10 minutes on Nominalisations can be watched as a stand-alone section
Solution Focussed Questioning, The Miracle Question and Positive Goals,
along with a rough and ready 10 minute demonstration.
A summary of these techniques and suggested exercises for practicing them can be found here:
